Fun fact! While being physically struck is generally called assault, from a legal perspective the term for it is battery! Assault, the tort, is when someone has the fear of imminent physical harm. So, if someone throws a punch at you and you can see them at the time, that's assault and battery. If they punch you from behind and you didn't see it coming, that's only battery. That's just the terms from a legal perspective though. And sexual assault uses the word differently.
